  • Day by Day

Aboard Zwaantje, Princesse Royal, Magnifique II, III, IV

    1. Amsterdam

Embarkation and check-in is at 2 pm, where your crew for the week will be waiting to welcome you on board. After unpacking your luggage in your cabin, you’ll still have plenty of time to explore this famous city. Visit one or more museums or simply do some shopping. An introduction to the tour will take place back on board at 5.30 pm, during which the crew will be introduced and your first dinner will be served.

    2. Amsterdam - Breukelen - Vianen (35/45 km)

You’ll start your first day on the bike by cycling out of Amsterdam to the historical town of Muiden, with its 14th century waterfront castle. Ride along the Vecht River in an area famous for its beautiful mansions, small castles, impressive houses and their large gardens. Close to Vreeland you can visit a traditional cheese farm. After cycling through the charming villages of Loenen and Nieuwersluis, you’ll arrive at Breukelen where you’ll rejoin your ship. Around 5 pm the ship departs for Vianen and you can enjoy dinner while cruising. Spend the evening and night in Vianen, a small fortified town on the Lower Rhine river.

    3. Vianen - Schoonhoven - Kinderdijk - Dordrecht (30/60 km)

Today you will cycle along a beautiful route to Schoonhoven – nicknamed Zilverstad (“Silver City”) – a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. Later in the day as you cycle through the Alblasserwaard region you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight – you will have the opportunity to visit one so don’t forget to bring your camera! From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take you and your bicycle in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland.

    4. Dordrecht - Willemstad - Tholen - Antwerp (35/45 km)

As you enjoy your breakfast aboard the ship, the ship will sail to Willemstad where you will start your day’s cycling. Willemstad is a beautiful old fortified town on the Haringvliet waterway. Your bicycle ride goes to Tholen, once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. But it is still a picturesque village with many relics of an eventful past. In the afternoon you will once again board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions such as the City Hall and the historical City Square Grote Market. After dinner you can visit the beautiful old city center.

    5. Antwerp - St. Amands (35/50 km)

Today’s tour will see you cycle out of Antwerp on a beautiful cycle path alongside the picturesque tidal Schelde River to St Amands – depending on tides - your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

    6. St Amands - Ghent (50 km)

Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the barge will moor for the night at a lock in the suburb of Merelbeke. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers ensured its success as a trading port. In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre.

    7. Ghent - Bruges (20/45 km)

Today you will pedal from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the “Venice of the North”. The city attracts more than two million visitors every year who come for the ambience of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre. An outstanding example of a medieval settlement from the Middle Ages, Bruges has managed to maintain its historical fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic constructions form an integral part of the town's identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

    8. Bruges

Disembarkation after breakfast around 9:30 am and end of tour.

    2. Vianen - Dordrecht (55 km)

After breakfast you will cycle along a picturesque route to Schoonhoven - nicknamed “Silver City" - a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. 3. Dordrecht - Tholen - Antwerp (20/35 km)

During breakfast the barge will sail to Tholen where you will start your day’s cycling by visiting the “Wouwse Plantage” forest. Another attraction on the day is the impressive Kreekrak lock. After once again meeting up with the Fluvius you will finish your day by sailing to the port city of Antwerp which is situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and has many attractions that include: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. After dinner visit the beautiful old city centre.

    4. Antwerp - Dendermonde (50/65 km)

Today’s tour will see you cycle out of Antwerp on a beautiful cycle path alongside the picturesque tidal Schelde River to Dendermonde – depending on tides - your home for the night. The landscape around the Schelde is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

    5. Dendermonde - Ghent (50 km)

6. Ghent - Bruges (45 km)

    7. Bruges round tour (40/50 km)

Your final day of cycling takes you along a quiet canal and past beautiful poplar trees through an attractive polder landscape (a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments) dotted with small farm houses to the North Sea coast. Here you will have the opportunity to swim in the sea along an inviting 12 km sandy beach, visit any one of numerous cafés and see the attractive dune landscape of “Het Zwin” (a unique nature reserve). On the return ride to Bruges you will cycle along a small picturesque canal.

    8. Bruges

Disembarkation after breakfast around 9:30 am and end of tour.

Due to organisational reasons, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday. Issues with high and low water, as well as logistic obstacles such as officially ordered - previously not announced - repair work on locks or bridges can modify some of the daily stretches or overnight stays. These decisions are only taken by the barge’s captain.

  • Route profile

The Netherlands are the country of bicycles, mainly due to its flat landscape, under the north sea level. The cycle path network, almost entirely paved, is very widespread and sign posted with white and red signs and with small stumps called “mushrooms”, numbered and signalled on the maps.

It is easy to cycle in Belgium as well, especially if you ride your bike along the flat maritime region. Belgium has recently unified its bike paths net with the Dutch one.

Note that sometimes the bike lanes are separated from the street only by a red line, so please pay attention. Wind and rain are very frequent in this country and they might make your cycling difficult at times.

It won’t be hard to deal with this tour, but you will need to be a bit trained in order to stay a whole week on the saddle!

  • How to get there

The precise embarkation point will be written in the Final Tour Details that you will receive a few days before departure. Consider about a 15 minute bus ride from the train station to the point of embarkation (the busses are frequent).

    By Plane

The easiest way to get to the starting point is flying into Amsterdam. In order to get to the embarkation point you need to leave from Amsterdam central station by taking the train directly at the airport. You can purchase the tickets at the cashiers, which usually accept debit and credit cards. The journey takes about 20 minutes, the cost is about € 5. To book the train tickets in advance visit www.ns.nl.

    By Train

The nearest arrival point is Amsterdam Centraal Station. More information on www.ns.nl

    By Car

Parking in the centre of Amsterdam is very expensive, we suggest parking on the outskirt of the city.
